World Cup Phrase – Third-Place Play-off

In major competitions such as the World Cup, the losing semi-finalists play against each other the day before the final in order to decide which team finishes third or fourth and this game is known as the third and fourth place play-off or simply the third-place play-off.

  • Example: Germany defeated Uruguay 3-2 in the 2010 third-place play-off match in South Africa
  • There have been calls to scrap the third-place play-off as many feel it is a pointless game
