Weekly Football Phrase: To stick it in the net

This weeka€™s English for Football phrase is a€˜to stick it in the neta€˜, which means to score a goal. The verb to stick here means to put or place, or finish off a good move in football, while the pronoun ‘it’ refers to the ball. So, to stick it in the net means to finish off a good move with a goal. This week Dimitar Berbatov scored a hat-trick and the way he stuck home the goals suggested he has found his scoring touch again. To stick it in the net.
