This week’s English for football phrase is the expression crunch game which refers to a match that is important for both teams taking part – there is a lot at stake. A crunch game can be decisive in that a team might need to win to progress to the next round of a competition, to avoid relegation or to win a title. This weekend many of the teams at the foot of the English Premier league table are playing against each other and defeat against a direct rival could prove to be critical: they really are crunch games.
