title race – the competition between the top teams in the division.
e.g. This season the title race looks like it will be between Chelsea and Man. Utd.
back into form – the team is playing better
e.g. after losing at Reading I hope Spurs come back into form next weekend.
standing ovation – when supporters stand up and applaud a good
e.g. Ronaldo received a standing ovation from the Blackburn fans
to get the sack – to lose your job, be fired, be kicked out
e.g. Iain Dowie was the first Premier League manager to get the sack.
bounce back – to come back quickly
e.g. Iain Dowie’s catchphrase was ‘bouncebackability’.
on the road – playing away from home (travelling)
e.g. Liverpool have not played well on the road this season.
trounced – to beat a team easily.
e.g. Manchester United trounced Fulham 5-1 earlier this season.
swallow humble pie – should admit that mistakes have been made
e.g. Benitez should swallow humble pie and drop Reina
should be a cracker – the game will be very exciting (firework)
e.g. Manchester City and Fulham should be a cracker (possibly being ironic!)
