Vocabulary – week 13

Here are some of the words and phrases that we used on this weeka€™s show. Check out the BBCa€™s football vocabulary page here

  • cut up the pitch – to destroy the quality of the playing surface
  • The NFL game at Wembley cut up the pitch badly.

    • a thunderbolt – a really strong shot

    Nani scored with a thunderbolt shot against Middlesbrough last week.

    • to steal (your) thunder – to take the limelight away from (you)

    Nani is stealing Ronaldo’s thunder.

    • to be thumped – to be badly beaten

    Manchester City were thumped 6-0 by Chelsea last week.

    • under performing – not playing well

    Tottenham have been under performing all season.

    • to incur the wrath of – to make the players feel really angry

    Lee incurred the wrath of the senior players.

    • managerial casualty – a manager that lost his job

    I think Benitez will be the next managerial casualty.

    • tripled – three times as much

    Juande Ramos has tripled his salary after his move to Spurs.

    • for the chop – to be fired

    Which manager is next for the chop?

    • a host of – a large quantity

    There are a host of top managers waiting in the wings

    • to put up a fight – to do well

    Manchester City did not really put up a fight against Chelsea.

    • to turn the corner – to start playing better

    We thought that Milan had turned the corner but they were defeated again.

    • to stem the tide – to stop a team from playing well

    Liverpool stemmed the Arsenal attacking tide.

    • to be hovering – to be just under

    Newcastle are hovering under the European places in the league.

    • five-horse race – five teams have a chance of winning the league.

    In Spain it is a five-horse race with Madrid, Espanyol, Villareal, Barcelona and Valencia.

    • to flog a dead horse – to continue tipping a team even though they are playing badly.

    Damon continues to flog a dead horse by tipping Juventus.

    • sour grapes – to be bad losers

    Barcelona showed sour grapes by suggesting that Rangers played anti-football.
