Football Headlines – ‘Bayern Munich crush Barcelona with Thomas Müller leading the rout

Football headlines – Today is one from The Guardian newspaper and is all about the Champions League first leg game between German side Bayern Munich and Spanish team Barcelona. The Germans won easily by four goals to nil; they thrashed Barcelona, in other words, they crushed them 4-0. Sometimes we use the word thrashing to describe a heavy defeat while we also use the word rout to mean the same. The main player on the German side was attacking midfielder Thomas Müller who scored twice and provided an assist and so we say that he lead the rout – he was one of the main reasons why Barcelona were thrashed, crushed or routed. If we were to paraphrase the headline it might read: ‘Müller helps Bayern to thrash Barcelona’.
