It was good for Argentina as they retained their Olympic title by defeating Nigeria 1-0 in sweltering Beijing last week. Angel Di Maria scored the winning goal but yet again it was Lionel Messi who set it up.
Nagoya Grampus, in Japan’s J-League, finally beat their bogey team Kashima in the league. Frode Johnsen slotted home the winner from the spot to seal a famous victory. Their put them in second place and was also good news for Urawa Reds who leap-frogged Kashima as well to go top of the league.
The Bad
Fulham’s new Ghanaian defender, John Pantsil’s horror tackle on Arsenal’s Emmanuel Eboue during the Gunners’ surprise loss at Craven Cottage. Eboue was extremely lucky not to be injured and Pantsil made no attempt to get the ball…
Bad for the other North London side, Tottenham as they lose at home to Sunderland to record their second defeat in a row. In addition, top striker Dimitar Berbatov did not play and looks almost certain to move away from Spurs who yet again have started poorly in the Premier League.
Ugly
UEFA President, Michel Platini has warned Roma that if their fans’ behaviour does not improve the club may lose the chance to host the Champions League final in May 2009. Tough words indeed from the former French international.
