In this week’s review section we look back at some of the big stories from the world of football to help learners of English improve their vocabulary. This week we congratulate AC Milan on defeating Barcelona, report on Arsenal’s cup troubles and Spurs fans in France. You can find explanations of key vocabulary in bold below.
Good
Well done to Italian side AC Milan as they defeated Barcelona in the first leg of their Champions League match in the San Siro. Goals from Boateng and Muntari sealed the win for the Rossoneri and the pressure is now on Barcelona to try and get through to the quarter-finals. Milan have had their troubles this season but they have hit form at the right time and could pull off a huge upset by knocking out the favourites for the trophy.
Bad
It has been a tough week for Arsenal as they were dumped out of the FA Cup by Championship side Blackburn Rovers at the weekend and then they were well beaten by German powerhouse Bayern Munich in the Champions League. Manager Wenger is under pressure as it looks as if his side, once so dominant in English football, now faces the possibility of an eighth season without a trophy.
Ugly
Ugly scenes in France as Tottenham fans were attacked while in Lyon for their side’s Europa League tie. French newspaper L’Equipe reported that the attack may have been carried out by Lyon ultras – the hooligan section of the support – with some suggestions that the reason may have been due to anti-Semitic feeling.
