On this week’s show Damian and Damon look back at the Champions League and review the UEFA Cup and ask why this competition is in decline. In addition the team, review the football week in the Good, the Bad and the Ugly; introduce a new Vox Pops topic; continue the David Beckham update in Beckham Watch. They also introduce a football expression in English for Football and continue their weekly battle in the predictions competition.
Hey Paul,
thanks for the comments – it is always good to get feedback.
Possible cause for the lacklustre speech is, as Damon mentioned, the fact that we are recording in different countries at the moment but also I am still recovering from Tottenham’s Carling Cup win!
I agree Miguel. I think Paul’s comments are unfair. But I do have a challenge for you Paul. Why don’t you contribute to the site, and could you please make it the “accessable, interesting and enthusiastic” content you so strive? And just to help you along with appreciating your audience, I am a Derby County Fan, so anything positive would be welcome. Anything!
Unfair comments from Paul – any teacher worth their salt would be able to use any or all of the materials available on the site. They are free too! I am a Real Madrid fan by the way!
Hey Paul,
Thanks for the comments. Fair point about differentiated podcasts – we do do two a week (one full and one shorter called ‘Learner’s Pod’), but at the moment three would be a little too demanding: we produce vocabulary lists, worksheets and transcripts each week too. As for the intonation and expression you have come to our pods at a strange time as my partner and I are in different countries and ‘live’ recordings have been impossible for the last two or three weeks. That could account for the less ’emotional’ interaction. Listen to a few of the earlier podcasts and see what you think. The sprinkling of uk-(football-)based references is how we speak and that ‘authenticity’ is part of our goal. We try not to grade language. However, some of those idioms are a focus of our podcasts each week in English for Football and are recycled in later shows. It’s a difficult balance to get – authenticity and accessibility.
We do both have a passion for football and teaching English and welcome comments and advice.
Any predictions for the FA Cup ties?
Cheers,
admin
Good God. To be fair I’ve only listened to one of your podcasts, (found through the link on Facebook) No 31. But Jeezus this was dire. While I appreciate that the site and podcasts are aimed primnarily at second language learners, is this really a reason to remove all intonation, expression and enthuisiasm from your voices altogether? You both obviously have an absolute love for the game and for teaching English but I’m afraid neither of these things comes through on your cast. An appreiceation of the audience is obviously necessary and yet you liberaly sprinkle a variety of mixed idoms and historical, uk based references among your narrative. Perhaps three differentiated pocasts aimed at diffent levels of langauge aquisition might go down well. Afterall there are a lot of people out there who have a love of the game and are inspired to learn English because of it. It is a great idea, don’t put them off. Could you make it accessable, interesting and enthusiastic? Paul
