Now qualification for Euro 2008 is out of England’s hands. England may not go to Europe’s premier competition held in Switzerland and Austria. Is that so bad? I reckon it could be a blessing in disguise. The last major tournament England missed was the World Cup in the USA in 1994. No bad thing given the way Brazil bored everyone to being crowned champions, and seeing Maradonna fall from grace. Remember that the Columbian Escobar was shot after his team were eliminated. Good thing England kept a low profile in that one. Also, so many of England’s players are criticised, with some justification, for being a bunch of prima donnas, and the ‘Golden Generation’ tag they were labelled with at the last World Cup probably increased their misconception of their own abilities and worth – let’s face it they get paid a bucket-load. Maybe missing out on the big event may bring them back to earth, give them a taste of disappointment, make them realise that perhaps more effort should have been given in all of those ‘minor’ qualifying games. As for the fans, they’ll be spared the embarrassment of another quarter final exit on penalties after being told that the cup was ours.
I’m already deciding who to support out of the others on their way to the competition. Come on Poland!
blody hell. talk about rolling over and giving up! more of the blitz spirit please and can do attitude. Dont make me invoke Chirchill!! this make-do oh-well attitude smacks of treason.
Becks for England? Surely not!
A lament about England and no mention of Beckham. Bring him back!
Pretty sure the Swiss/Austrian police forces will be somewhat happier too.
