This week both Damon and Damian are in London and they recorded this week’s show from a rainy London cafe – complete with background noise! It’s Week 2 of the Premier League season and on today’s show we look back at some of the big football news from the week featuring Liverpool and Ronaldo and look ahead to some of the games taking place this weekend including a big London derby between Tottenham and Chelsea. There is also a transcript for those who wish to practise their reading and listening skills (Damian = DF, Damon = DB).

DF: You are listening to Languagecaster’s football-language podcast. Hello everybody, my name’s Damian and I’m sitting here in a very cold, miserable, rainy day in central London. Damon, how are you doing?
DB: I’m doing very well Damian. And it’s good to be here with you in London. Yes, I have come over to Europe and I’m having a wonderful time with this wonderful weather that er… you are blessed with. Yes, usually I’m in Tokyo talking to Damian here in London but today we are together.
DF: So Damon, since you’ve been over this… this week have you seen any football?
DB: Well yes, I did manage to see Liverpool play Hoffenheim in their first qualifying leg for the Champions League group stages which was honestly a good result for us. How about you? Are you going to watch any football this weekend?
DF: I am. I’ve got tickets to see Tottenham versus Chelsea – a big London derby – Tottenham’s…
DB: At Wembley, right?
DF: Yes, the first game at Wembley, so looking forward to that but a little nervous as well.
DB: Sounds good. Now what have we got on the show?
DF: Well, we are going to be looking ahead to some of the big games taking place in the Premier League this weekend, including that Tottenham-Chelsea game. And we’ll be looking back at some of the big football news in the good, the bad and the ugly.
Hello, I’m Tracey and I’m a Lowestoft Town FC fan – come on the Trawler Boys – and you are listening to Languagecaster.com.
DB: OK, well let’s kick off with the good, the bad and the ugly.
DF: Right Damon what was good for you this week?
DB: Oh it’s got to be Liverpool-Hoffenheim, hasn’t it? 2-1. And what about Trent-Alexander, scoring his first ever Liverpool goal in his first Champions League game. A fantastic free-kick and a fantastic result – I’m happy with that. What about bad?
DF: Well, it wasn’t so good for Chelsea, was it…
DB: No, it wasn’t…
DF: …last weekend? No, they …they had two men sent off and they lost at home to Burnley – 3-2 – most people would have tipped Chelsea to have won that. And there seems to be a bad atmosphere around the club, what do you reckon?
DB: Yes, there certainly does. All those red cards are definitely not a big help at all. It looks like the bubble has been punctured a little after Conte’s first season and who knows what’s going to happen this weekend if Tottenham could beat them they could go in a tailspin. What about ugly?
DF: Well, we are going to feature the Super Cup in Spain and Real Madrid had a fantastic 3-1 away victory and then they won the second leg 2-0 so they are the Super Cup champions of Spain – they really beat Barcelona, didn’t they? But it wasn’t good for Real Madrid star Ronaldo. He came off the bench, scored a fantastic goal, then was sent off for two yellow cards – he then pushed the referee.
DB: A big no no.
DF: Yes and he subsequently got a five-match ban.
DB: I don’t think it’s going to hold Los Blancos back though.

Predictions: Tottenham vs Chelsea
DB: OK and to finish this show we’re going to do predictions. And I think we should really start with that Tottenham-Chelsea game at Wembley. What do you think Damian?
DF: Well, as I mentioned before I’m a little nervous because of the ‘Wembley factor’ as it’s now known. But Chelsea are fairly weakened because of suspensions and injuries… I’m… 2-1 to Spurs, why not! What do you think?
DB: Yes, I think you’re going to beat them too. You’re going to lay the … lay to rest the Wembley curse if you like. I think you’re going to win this one 1-0.
Stoke City vs Arsenal
DF: Good stuff. Now the other game we are going to feature is Stoke City who host Arsenal, what do you reckon?
DB: Well this is one of those classic games, isn’t it? Arsenal traditionally have done very, very poorly when they go up to the Potters and play Stoke. They did have a good result last year, however, a lacklustre Stoke team then. But I think Mark Hughes’ team this weekend will be out to relive those moments when they gave Arsenal a difficult time. So I think we could see a 1-1 draw.
DF: Er, I’m going to disagree with you there and it hurts me, it pains me to say this but I think Arsenal are going to be too good for Stoke – they are going to win this one 2-0; comfortable as well.
Everton v Manchester City
DB: Alright and then we’ve got Everton who are playing Manchester City. Now, both these teams have spent quite a bit of money in the transfer window. Sigurdsson joining Everton up front… what do you think?
DF: I think City have looked good at the beginning – I tipped them to win the title – I think they are going to beat Everon 2-1 for me. What about you?
DB: Yes, I agree I just don’t think, although Everton have bought plenty of players their squad still looks a little bit light to me on quality when you compare it to Manchester City, so I’m thinking 3-0 to City.
DF: OK, thanks everybody for listening. Remember, if you want to contact us just come along to languagecaster.com. You can contact us through Facebook, through Twitter, we’ve also got a forum, you can also come to us by email.
DB: Yep, thanks a lot everybody – enjoy all of the football and I hope your team does well. Ta-ra!
DF: Bye bye.
