    FOOTBALL EXPRESSION

This weeka€™s English for Football phrase is to rue which means to regret and in football is often used with the word miss, as in missed chances and opportunities missed. This means that a team (or a player) regrets the fact that there had been a chance of winning or scoring a goal but that opportunity then disappeared. This week, Wales midfielder Gareth Bale rued his side’s failure to take their chances in the game against Switzerland in the recent European Championship qualifier – a game in which Wales lost 1-4. To rue missed chances.
