      What does “chase shadows” mean?

England chasing shadows at the moment, Scotland are hogging the ball.

If a team is chasing shadows it means they are off the pace and they cannot get near to the opposition. In this example, Scotland are hogging the ball which means they are keeping it – keeping possession – and England cannot get near them (they are chasing shadows).
