This season (2021-22) sees a new European club competition: The Europa Conference League which is the new third tier European tournament (after the Champions League and the Europa League) is a competition for teams from lower-ranked leagues and also some teams that finish outside the top 5 or 6 in some of the bigger leagues, for example, one team qualifies from England’s Premier League. Similar to the other two European competitions, there are preliminary rounds before a series of group stages (eight groups of four teams). Not all of the top two finishers in these groups qualify for the last 16 but instead will have to play a side that has dropped down from the Europa League. The winners of the Europa Conference League earn a place in the following season’s Europa League.
- Example: The inaugural Europa Conference League final takes place in Tirana Albania between Roma and Feyenoord.
- Example: Tottenham out of Europa Conference League after UEFA confirms forfeit for Rennes game (Sky Sports.com, December 20th 2021).
