Football Language: Clean through
Clean through: When a player has broken free from his/her marker and attacks the goal with only the keeper to beat we can say that the forward is clean through. Sometimes we add the phrase ‘on goal’ – clean through on goal – which has the same meaning but suggests that the attacking player is directly in front of the goal. Another similar phrase is ‘to bear down on goal‘ which again suggests that the player is moving in on goal in a threatening manner.
