Football Language: To beat a player
There are many ways to get through a defence, such as passing around the opposition, but sometimes the only way to break down an opposing defence is to beat a player. This can be done by pace – simply running past a defender – or by dribbling around a defender by maybe jinking or skipping past them. Players who are good at beating another player are highly valued as they can do one of the most difficult things in football – break down a defence. Beat a player.
Example: The winger beat his player on such a regular basis that the manager had to substitute the defender at half-time.
