Appoint a new manager

The big news this week from Spain is that FC Barcelona have a new manager – former Real Betis coach, Quique Setién. The Catalan side moved quickly to appoint Setién after firing Ernesto Valverde this week in a shock move; remember that Valverde had won two La Liga titles in a row but it seems that Barca’s failure in the Champions League cost him his job. To appoint someone to a new job means that an organisation (Barcelona) has decided to give the position or job to someone (Setién). Despite the fact that Barcelona are currently top of the table in Spain, it seems that Valverde’s days were numbered after some recent performances in the league as well as two spectacular second-leg defeats in the Champions League. It seems that Barcelona had wanted to appoint their former player Xavi as the new manager but he turned them down due to a lack of experience – I wonder will he be appointed in the near future?

How about the new appointment? Well, Quique Setién has never managed a club of this size before but his style of football is very much in sync with Barcelona’s – they will attack and try to entertain so it should be fun for the rest of the season at least! An interesting appointment indeed from Barcelona. Now, I wonder who will be the next appointment at Real Madrid…?

Example: Jose Mourinho appointed new head coach (Official Tottenham Hotspur website, November 2019).

Example: David Moyes appointed new West Ham manager as ex-boss returns to London Stadium (Daily Mirror, 29 December 2019).
