(to) Crash out of

To crash out of a competition: When a team is badly beaten in a cup competition. It is usually a surprise defeat or a heavy defeat. Other words similar to crash out include, to be eliminated, to be knocked out and to be dumped out of a tournament.

  • Example: France crashed out of the 2010 World Cup after three poor performances.
  • Example: Manchester City crashed out of the Champions League at the group stage.
