(to) Come a Cropper

This phrase is used to describe a situation when a team fails badly at something particularly a big team against a smaller team.
  • Example: Scotland came a cropper against Macedonia in their World Cup qualifier losing 0-1 away from home.
  • Example: Brazil came a cropper against Holland in the 2010 World Cup quarter-final when many thought they would win the title.
