When a team has to move down a division because of poor results. The club is generally occupying the bottom two or three positions.
  • Example: Tottenham have not suffered relegation since the 1976-77 season when they went down from Division One to Division Two.
  • Example: The three new clubs in the Premier League this season will all be hoping to avoid relegation.
