To be relegated means that a team has to move down a division because of poor results; the club is generally occupying the bottom two or three positions in the league. If a team is relegated then it means they will be playing at a lower level the following season; so for example if a team is relegated from the Premier League it means they will play in the Championship the following season. Other words that mean the same include, ‘go down‘; ‘be demoted‘ and ‘drop down a division‘.
  • Example: Tottenham have not suffered relegation since the 1976-77 season when they went down from Division One to Division Two.
  • Example: The three new clubs in the Premier League this season will all be hoping to avoid relegation.
  • Example: Leicester, Leeds relegated from Premier League as Everton survive (Al-Jazeera, 28 May 23)
