Football Glossary: Ply one’s trade

Today’s post looks at the phrase ‘to ply your trade‘. Ply one’s trade

This expression is another way of saying to work and in football it usually means to play for a team or a description of where they work (play). So if a player plies their trade in the WSL or the Championship it means they are playing in that division. We can also say that a player plies their trade for City or United which means they play for City or United.

  • Example: Despite the fact that the forward plies their trade in a lower league they were selected for the national team.
  • Example: Before playing in England, Manchester City star Yaya Toure plied his trade at Barcelona
  • Example: Chelsea manager Emma Hayes is ‘absolutely certain’ that womena€™s football has broken beyond the small stadia it currently plies its trade within… (Football.London, 20 November 2022)
