Football Glossary: Group Stage

(the) Group stage

The earlier rounds of a competition or tournament when teams play each other to determine which sides progress to the next round (The Champions League or World Cup both have group stages.
  • Example: The group stages in many major tournaments are often more exciting than the knock-out stage.
  • Example: Scotland have never gone beyond the group stage at a World Cup
