(to) Get off to a flier

[gss-content-box color=”gray”]

This simply means that a team has started a match or the season very well indeed. So, for example this year in the Premier League Manchester City, Everton, and Chelsea have won both of their first two games, so we can say they’ve got off to a flier.

  • Example: England got off to a flier against France when scoring after 27 seconds in their 1982 World Cup match
  • Example: Barcelona have got off to a flier in Villanova’s first season as coach; winning 16 of 17 matches
