Football Glossary: Defence

Defence

The group of players that try to protect a teama€™s goal. The defence is usually made up of a goalkeeper, two full backs and two centre backs (centre half).

  • Example: Spaina€™sA defenceA was the best at the Euro 2008 tournament a€“ they only conceded 2 goals throughout.
  • Example: Arsenal have been having trouble with their defence since Sol Campbell retired.
