Own Goal
On day nine of the Euros, Georgia took on the Czech Republic, Belgium faced Romania, and Turkey took on Portugal. The latter game ended 3-0 to the Portuguese, but Turkey didn’t help themselves with an incredible own goal by defender Samet Akaydin.
The Turkish defender rolled the ball past his goalkeeper and into the net with a no look back pass. It was a terrible own goal. An own goal is, of course, when a player scores in their own net. Usually they are and unfortunate deflection, like Italian player Riccardo Calafiori’s against Italy. Or an own goal could be a clearnance gone wrong, like Austrian Wöber’s header off a French cross.
Akaydin’s was simply a massive error, as he was not under pressure and his goalkeeper was calling for the ball. Instead he stroked the ball into his own net. A terrible own goal!
Here is how Goal.com described it: ‘Turkey’s Samet Akaydin scored a calamitous own goal against Portugal after his no-look back pass rolled by stranded goalkeeper Altay Bayindir.’
