Portugal and Slovenia played out a tense 0-0 draw in their last-16 match in the 2024 Euros which meant the game went to penalties. Sometimes we hear the phrase ‘shoot-out‘ to describe these penalties as both teams have to shoot at goal from the penalty spot a minimum of five times. So, a shoot-out is a way of deciding a game when the teams have drawn the tie. In this example (below) from the BBC, the writers have used an adjective to describe the shoot-out – dramatic – which means that it was full of drama or action. So, a dramatic shoot-out victory for Portugal means that they won the tie after penalties or on penalties against the unlucky Slovenian side.
- Example: Portugal still progressed to the quarter-finals of Euro 2024 following a dramatic shootout victory over Slovenia (BBC.co.uk, July 1 2024).
