Euro 2012 Headline of the Day: Ruthless Russia Thrash Czechs

Today’s headline is from the BBC Website and is all about Russia’s wonderful 4-1 win against The Czech Republic on the opening day of Euro 2012. The word ‘thrash‘ means to easily defeat another team, while the word ‘ruthless’ means to be without mercy or pity. Newspaper headlines often include alliteration (grouping words together that begin with the same letter or sound) in order to make it more attractive to readers and here the writer has used ruthless and Russia together for this purpose. Therefore the headline Ruthless Russia Thrash Czechs can be re-written as Russia show no mercy in easily beating The Czech Republic.
