What is the meaning of the phrases "sit on" and drop deep" mean in this context?
West Ham need to be careful here. Sitting on their lead and dropping a bit deeper would be a bad call.

If a team sits on their lead it means they are winning the game and then try to defend this lead. The team falls back into defence - maybe they defend deep or drop deep - and they try to see out the game and hold on to the victory. So, to drop deep is when a team defends close to their own goal.
