What is the meaning of the phrases "to the rescue" and "claw" in this sentence?

Everton 0-0 Liverpool
8: HUGE SAVE! Jordan Pickford to the rescue for Everton!

Mane weaves his way into the Everton area and cuts a great ball back to Salah, who fires first time towards the near post, but Pickford's reactions are superb and he gets down low to claw it from off his goal line.

Both of these examples refer to galkeepers. The first one explains that the Everton goalkeeper Pickford has saved his side - he came to their rescue by making a great save.

The second one explains how a keeper can save a shot - to claw the ball away means to stop the ball even though the ball is behind you. The keeper does not hold the ball or even punch it but uses their hand like a claw or shovel to clear the ball.
