What does "thrash" mean in football?
GOAL Southampton 1-0 Aston Villa (3 mins)
What a start! A long ball is played upfield, it bounces loose and Adam Armstrong thrashes a first time shot into the top corner

The verb thrash in football often refers to a heavy defeat but in this case it means that the player hit the ball really, really hard - he thrashed the ball into the net. Smash would be another way of saying this.
