What do you guys think about Ted Lasso? Is it a good source for learning English football terms, or should I just use it to expand my English language swearing skills?

Judging by the Topic title, it's obviously not a great help for English spelling.

The show's not so great on learning about English football, unless you know absolutely nothing. But it could be useful for learning English. Shows like this with a small cast of characters, regular shows, and fairly everyday situations, can be good at providing the context needed for picking up new vocabulary, phrases, and grammar structures.

I think it can be useful for learning about football terms too. For example, Ted often confuses language used in different sports and needs others (Coach Beard usually) to explain the differences to him.

  • 'scrimmage' instead of 'practice game'
  • 'Cleats' - 'boots' (or maybe 'studs'?)

I started making a list of some of the tings that Ted would say to players in the series that would be more common in US sports than football fans in the UK might be used to:

  • I wanna’ bench Jaimie = I want to substitute Jaimie (although this is becoming more common now in England)
  • Talking to the substitute: 'You’re going in' = Maybe we would say, 'you’re going on'

Not the same but still funny 😀

Series 1 (Episode 5)
Sam was more open than the jar of peanut butter on my kitchen counter (always open) for a pass
