I read in a BBC report that Everton were sloppy in their recent defeat - does this mean they were poor?Â

Yes, at least it means there was some poor defending. Sloppy means careless and so maybe the team were not concentrating which allowed the oposition to create chances or score a goal. We might also hear the phrase: sloppy pass - not a careful or accurate pass.
