What does the phrase "sloppy on the ball" mean?
Kovacic is caught in possession by Fred. The Chelsea midfielder temporarily wins it back, but United's press pays off and they mount an attack that ultimately comes to little. Both teams have been pretty sloppy on the ball today.

If a team (or a player) is sloppy on the ball it means that they are not so careful in their play - they lose the ball and don't hold on to possession so much.
