Hello, languagecaster team. To slash usually means to cut with a sharp blade using a quick, strong movement: When used in football term, what does it mean? Lukasz Fabianski doesn't make many mistakes in the West Ham goal but he somehow loses grasp of the ball and Marc Albrighton sees his shot charged down. From the follow-uo croner Wilfred Ndidi slashes a shot wildly over.

Dwi,

Great question. Imagine if you swing your foot at the ball - like a blade cutting some grass - and the power of your kick only goes to the side or underside of the ball. The ball spins away at an angle. It doesn't go straight or in the direction you want.

So to slash over or slash wide means to mis-hit the ball, so that it goes too high or too wide.

Cheers,

Damon
