What is the meaning of the verb "scramble" in this sentence?
Full time: Villa 2 Everton 1
Thrilling end to a match played in sweltering heat. Everton carved out enough late chances to have scrambled a draw but Villa shaded it on the balance of play and attacking incisiveness.ÂÂ
To scramble something suggests that it is rather messy and uncontrolled. We can say that to scramble the ball clear means that the defending side have some difficulty when clearing the ball.
To scramble a draw means to gain a point even though the team probably does not deserve it or if a team does not look like they will get the point and then at the end they manage to equalise.
We've also had a forum post on the word 'stramash' here - used to describe a scramble in the box (mainly in Scotland).

Thanks a lot, Damian. That helps me a lot understand football jargon.
