Could you explain what the verbs "register" and "offer" mean in this context?

What does "offer" mean in this context?

United failed to register a shot on target. Massively disappointing night and performance from them. City were good value for the win but I think it would have been far more comprehensive had the stakes not been so high. United offered very little.

To register a shot on target means to have a shot on target. In this example, United have not troubled the keeper - they have not had any shots on target. Another way of saying 'on target' would be 'on goal' - the team did not register a shot on goal.

Example: Lacklustre Liverpool fail to register a single shot on target (Talksport November 2020)

The verb 'offer' in this example means that United didn't do much during the game - they offered little attacking intent.

There is another common football expression with register - to register a win.
