I read that Ronaldo was 'orchestrating the attack' - does this mean he was leading the attack or playing well?

You could swap 'orchestrate' for 'conduct', which might make the meaning clearer - the phrase means controlling the attack, or, as you said, leading the attack.
Another phrase is 'pulling the strings in attack.
