Dear everyone. What does "on the ropes" mean here? FT: Ukraine 2-1 North Macedonia A hopeful long ball comes to nothing, and time is up! Ukraine were on the ropes, but they have held on.

Hello Hyuna,
The phrase 'on the ropes' is a boxing term and in that sport it means a fighter is under pressure. So, in football if a team is on the ropes it means they are under real pressure as the opposition is continually pushing for a goal.
