What is the meaning of the words "shape" and "set" in these sentences?

38' Everton are dropping deeper into their shape, but Branthwaite makes a good interception to stop Pulisic. He tries to set Gordon on the counter, but his switch of play to the left is blocked by Azpilicueta.

27' Everton are keeping their shape well, but they're struggling to keep hold of the ball when they move upfield. Gordon has a chance to run down the left, but a heavy touch gifts it to Azpilicueta.

Set

  1. To set Gordon on the counter means that his team mate has passed the ball to set up or start a counter attack for Gordon.

Shape

  1. If a team keeps their shape it means that they have remained in their right positions and this is seen as a positive thing as it means the opposition will find it more difficult to break them down.
