What is the meaning of the words "ace" and "hit" in this sentence?

88 England ace Ward-Prowse struggled to hit the back of the net with his poor penalty shot.
But he still managed to take advantage of his second chance on the rebound

An ace refers to a star of the team, someone who is the best performer at something in the team (maybe a free-kick specialist like James Ward-Prowse). In this example, England ace means that this player is an international and probably the best player in the team or at least has a high level. I think 'ace' usually refers to a goalscorer though - goalscoring ace

Hit the back of the net is to score a goal with a strong shot - it didn't just cross the line it hit the net at the back of the goal frame This phrase is rather romantic - all players want to score a goal that hits the back of the net (a strong, powerful shot that flies past the keeper!)
