What does "help" mean in these sentences?

88' Sterling makes a break into the Liverpool box and tries to offload back to De Bruyne. The Belgian tries to poke an effort at goal, but he can only help it wide of the left post.
To help on a pass or help on the ball basically means to pass the ball but there is also a suggestion that this type of pass is helping to continue the move.
The second example is slightly different - the player can only help the ball wide means that they have missed with their shot though this shot may have been a difficult chance. In this example, the player couldn't do much about it at all.
