What is the meaning of the phrase "hell of job" in this sentence?
Erik Ten Hag admits he has a "hell of a job" on his hands after Manchester United slumped to an opening day defeat.
Hell of a job means that it is a really difficult job; that there is a lot to do. The manager could also have said that 'This is an extremely difficult job' but the word 'hell' emphasises the difficulty even more (and maybe describes how bad the siutaion is at Manchester United?).
If you look at the headline above this one in the newspaper they write about Manchester City's Haaland and use a pun to say 'Haal of a job' which means that he is doing a really good job. If someone says that you have done a hell of a job this would be positive and they would be saying that you'd done a really good job.
Thanks a lot for the explanation, Damian.
