What does "man" actually mean in football?
Atalanta are prepared to go man to man with Manchester United and put them under pressure - United have just got to work that bit harder and win the battle against their opponent.

United have to push men forward now.
It means the gaps will become chasms now
Ronaldo beats his man and crosses for Rashford.

Man to man here means that the team has decided to mark the opposition individually, i.e. each player will mark one player each. This is different from zonal marking in which defences will mark space and areas rather than individual players.
