What do the phrases "go on the counter" and "thwart" mean? Usually also "what a counter". Is it a short way for "what a counter attack"?

Saints go immediately on the counter from the counter and Morgan almost has his second but is thwarted by a Marrison save.

Go on the counter means to attack quickly after stopping an attack by the opponents - to counter attack.
To thwart is to stop, so in football, to stop an attack, for example, with a tackle.
You are right - "What a counter" means "What a (great) counter attack".

Thank you very much again, Grell. I now understand a lot of football vocabulary little by little.
