What is the meaning of the phrase "get out of jail" and "composed" in football?
Ronaldo got United out of jail again in stoppage time as the veteran forward struck a superb low effort past Juan Musso.
Atalanta 2-1 Manchester United
78min: Atalanta are looking composed on the ball again. Dare I say it but United almost look tired. Not much pressing from Solskjaer's side as Atalanta pass it around with ease.
Looks like United are going to have to rely on a late 'Get out of jail' card once again in the Champions League. I'm sure Ronaldo has read the script.
If a team gets out of jail it means they have escaped from the game with a positive result despite not playing very well. A get out of jail card is used in the board game Monopoloy and in this example, to play a get out of jail card is to play a special card that can help the team - like a free pass. The special card here is of course Ronaldo who scored a late goal again!
To be composed on the ball means that the team are keeping the ball well; they are in control of possession.
Thanks a lot for the explanation, Damian.
