What do "floater" and "claim" mean in football?
85 min: Keita latches onto a loose ball, 30 yards out, and sends a first-time floater towards the top left. Dubravka claims spectacularly. (Liverpool vs Newcastle, The Guardian)
SUB Arsenal 1-0 West Ham (85 mins)
West Ham pushing for a leveller despite being a man down. Jarrod Bowen clips a ball into the box but it's a simple claim for Aaron Ramsdale.
RANGERS claimed all three points in the Capital this afternoon, running out 2-0 winners against Hearts at Tynecastle.
Float
A floater or a floated ball is when a player hits a high pass to a team mate. This kind of pass is not normally hit so hard but is associated with precision. In the example above, the player doesn't control the ball but instead hits a high pass into the penalty area looking for his team mate: a first-time floater.
Claim
- To claim all three points means that the team has won the game, they won the three points. Another way of saying this would be to say that a team has 'secured the win/three points'.
- We can also use the word 'claim' to dscribe when a keeper comes to collect a cross or a ball. So, a simple claim from Dubravka means that the Newcastle keeper has easily collected the ball.
Thanks a lot, Damian
