What is the meaning of the phraes "fairytale" and "burst balloon" in this sentence?
HALF TIME
A strange first half has come to an end.
It was a rollercoaster for the Newcastle fans, who came ready to begin a new era and were rewarded with the perfect start as Callum Wilson gave the home side a fairytale opener.
But Spurs burt their balloon as they took control of the game and took the reins with a 2-1 lead after goals from Tanguy Ndombele and Harry Kane. Before Son added a third just before half time.
All that is secondary, as the game was suspended after a fan required medical treatment.
Now, thankfully, the supporter appears to be stable and is on their way to hospital.
Fairytale opener means a dream opening - a really good start to the game.Â
To burst a team's bubble means that a team has destroyed the dreams (fairytale) of another team. So, in this example Spurs burst the Newcastle bubble after scoring twice in quick succession.
Thanks for the explanation, Damian.
