What do "animal" and "work" mean in this sentence?

If a team is a different animal it means that they have changed and in this case it means that United were not playing well but now are playing much better. The are a different animal - they have started to play better. It's not so common I think.
To work some room means to create some space. If a player can work some room in a tight area it means they have made some space/freed up some space and were able to move away from the opponent.Â
