What is the difference between "home" and "in" in the following?
Rooney thunders home a wonderful second after Mata picks him out with a clever through pass.
Rooney thunders in a wonderful second after Mata picks him out with a clever through pass.

I don't think there is a difference in meaning - they both mean that Rooney scores a wonderful second goal.
