During the Portugal-Turkey game there were some examples of people running onto the pitch so that they could take a selfie with Ronaldo. The person who does this is called a pitch invader.
The word ‘invader’ has a negative meaning as it suggests that someone is going somewhere that they are not supposed to.
- Verb: to invade
- Noun: invasion
- Person: invader
It was rather strange that so many people got onto the pitch with all the security in the stadium and although nothing serious happened this time these pitch invasions are rather serious. Not only do they hold up the play but players could easily be hurt by these types of invasions.
